This camera is one of the first ones to use the 4/3 standard for lens requirements and a standard fitting for different manufacturers lenses. I am an amateur photographer which used my Minolta X-700. I needed a DSLR camera body that could allow me to use the collection of lenses I have for the X-700. I now have the adapters for the 4/3 standard to Minolta MD lenses. It is better to buy the adapters for each lens. Yes, you have to use manual mode but that is no problem for a person who took a College class in Photography. That is why I said not for beginners in DSLR photography. For point and shoot, I use another Camedia 4040 Digital Camera.

I have used many high dollar DSLRs in my days. Other cameras with more megapixels etc. The Olympus E-1 is a great camera. This camera is also weather proof (not water proof). It's seams are sealed. I purchased this camera from AAAimaging on ebay and boy was I happy with the purchased. The camera is build like a tank and takes good pictures. Kodak made the legendary CCD sensor for this camera. Although with only 5.3 effective megapixels it's color rendition is very good. Picture quality at 100 ASA/ISO is very satisfactory. Images captured with this camera reminds of film camera quality. Probably attirbuted to the Kodak CCD sensor. Best lens I have used so far with this camera is the Olympus Zoom 14-54mm f2.8 which is fast to focus and produces very good picture quality. You simply can't go wrong purchasing this camera. I love it. I am sure you will too.Read full review

Common descriptive words for the Olympus E-1 are "rugged" and "workhorse". Having other Olympus cameras on hand, I wanted a good backup body, and decided to give this one a try. It was the first Olympus professional DSLR, and compared to newer models, much simpler to operate and quicker to learn. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of newer models, such as noise filters/reduction, or artistic filters, but coupled with a good lens (as in fast glass of f2.8 or f.1.8), it produces excellent quality images. There is only one card slot for a Compact Flash card, whereas newer models have two, the second for an xD card (primarily for backup if the CF card is full). Carrying extra CF cards easily resolves that issue. The E-1 is somewhat heavier than later models, but it is rugged and can stand the elements with its weatherproofed body. That's a real plus when shooting outdoors where whims of the weather can change conditions very quickly. The E-1 is an older model, and so the price is just too good to pass up. I would strongly suggest before buying one, though, to find out what the shutter count is. Mine came with approximately 43,000, not too bad for an older camera. Over 100,000 is getting toward the end of the suggested shutter life.Read full review
Still a great camera, if you know how to use it, I love the digital print, that has the "Film" quality when you print a picture, and with all the new programs designed for RAW images, you can coax the 5 mb to reveal a lot of data in the image. All around, its a classic !
