We purchased a pair of these units to extend the wifi range in our facility. These units are easy to configure as AP's, and appear to work quite well. The only anomaly that we have discovered is that activating the guest wifi access does not shield the internal network from users on the guest network, which is completely unacceptable. The whole purpose of guest access is to allow transient visitors to access the Internet without being able to see any other devices on your internal network. Not even the most current firmware update addresses this oversight. In our particular case, since a guest network is not a priority, this is not a deal breaker. If you do need a guest wifi feature for your use, you may want to look elsewhere.

A very "cool" looking router with a nice white case and pretty blue LED's, this router was originally purchased from ebay with DD-WRT pre-installed on the router over the stock firmware. I wanted to do some tweaking to the router, but when I tried to set the router up, there was just too many technical issues involved. So, I hooked up my old router, downloaded the firmware for the RT-N12 from the ASUS website and flashed the router to the ASUS firmware. I loaded the disc that came with the router and within 10 minutes had the router up and running. So, if you get this router with the stock configuration, and not the fancy/more technical DD-WRT, it's an easy setup. So far, it works well.
I have A ASUS RT-N12 already and I use it as an Access Point. The current modem/router which is needed for the specific internet provider only generates a "G" SSID. The AP works great by generating a "N" signal for my wi-fi N equipment. I bought this 2nd one to use as a Repeater (It can also be used as a Router). Using it as a Repeater, it did not successfully connect to any SSID I had and in another location it connected only once. It also had issues with duplicate IP addresses on the network and was not able to resolve the issue with the router generating the SSID. I was trying to get a Repeater cheap for a "hole" in my reception coverage and this one did not do the job. I use ASUS a lot and was disappointed in the performance of this device as a Repeater.
I'm a network engineer by trade. I am running 4-6 devices on the network at any given time. I bought this router after researching specs on about 5 different wireless routers in this price range. I have to say I am very pleased. I found this model very easy to set up. Configuration went smoother than most. The interface is easy on the eyes with enough detail and options for the more intrepid user. It is complete with the current wireless N standard (stay away from the "draft N". You don't really know what you'll get in my opinion). It also had a variety of security protocol options for those of us who go through pains to insure our setup is as secure as possible. It accurately detected my available bandwidth, and the ability to easily optimize available bandwidth for video streaming, surfing or gaming (or combinations)is very nice. As of this writing, it is well supported by the vendor. I was able to easily find, download and install a recent firmware. I had to enable b/g protocols to work with the kid's Wii, unfortunately, but still found the signal strength was about 25% better than my Linksys draft N on my devices that were farthest away form the router. That meant less time buffering video and no observed signal drop for the kiddies' Netflix. I would definitely recommend this device to my clients for home use. This is my first ASUS routerRead full review
Easy to setup, east to secure, took less than 5 minutes and it was was up and running. I recommend this router for anyone than does not want a lot of trouble setting up a private Wifi network.
